Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
308 AM PDT Fri Apr 4 2025

.KEY MESSAGES...

* Mostly dry with light winds and a gradual warming trend through
  Sunday.

* Quick moving trough brings mountain rain and snow showers along
with areawide breezy winds on Monday.

* Warming trend continues most of next week, with widespread 70s
and 80s in the valleys, 50s and 60s in the mountains.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

* Looking at current 3am radar imagery, light lake-effect snow
showers are forming off Pyramid Lake and moving south. These
will continue trough around 7-8am. A trace to at most 1" of
accumulations are possible, which could lead to slick roads
along I-80 (mostly west of US-95), as well as US-50. A few light
showers can`t be ruled out in the greater Reno metro area and
even as far west as Lake Tahoe.

* Ridge moves into the region today, allowing for a slight uptick
in temperatures. However, readings remain up to 10 degrees
below average for early April with light east/northeast winds.
All precipitation has moved out of the region, with left over
low clouds banking against the eastern Sierra. With the
aforementioned ridge shifting overhead, temperatures will
continue to increase into the weekend. We finally return to
April-like temperatures for Saturday, then above average
  temperatures by Sunday.

* A trough will quickly pass through the northern CA into the
northern Rockies overnight Sunday into Monday. Per latest
blended guidance, this feature will give us 20-30% for light
precipitation in the Tahoe area. The best chances (40-60%) for
precipitation remain in western Lassen County, Surprise Valley,
and far northern Washoe County. These areas have around at
40-50% chance for at least 0.10" of liquid. Snow levels remain
above 7,000`, so snow impacts are very limited. As for western
NV, the most we`ll see from this will be an increase in
southwest winds, with gusts between 30-40 mph. Finally, high
  temperatures tumble around 4-8 degrees.

* From Tuesday through at Friday, high pressure builds across much
of the western US. Temperatures will soar well above average,
with widespread 70s to a few 80 degree readings in western NV
and upper 50s to mid-60s in the eastern Sierra. By the end of
the next week, ensembles all show the ridge continuing to shift
east with long-wave trough pattern returning to the area. But,
details and confidence is low. -McKellar

&&

.AVIATION...

* VFR conditions through the weekend with light east/northeast
winds today and Saturday. Winds remains light from the
  west/southwest by Sunday.

* Freezing fog is likely for TRK this morning under clear skies
and residual moisture from the recent storm. Confidence is 80%
for LIFR between 10z-18z. The chance of fog formation in other
Sierra valleys, including around Mono Lake and KTVL, have lower
  20% chances. -McKellar
